Egypt in pain...

L'Egypte en souffrance...

The war in Ukraine has severely weakened Egypt's economy, and tourism has suffered greatly. Before the war, Russian and Ukrainian tourists accounted for 35 to 40% of visitors each year.

Egypt has also been greatly affected by the increase in the price of wheat, of which it imports more than 10 million tons each year, mostly from Russia and Ukraine. In the country, food prices have doubled in less than a year. More than a third of the population is now reportedly living below the poverty line.

Indeed, I would like to add my personal testimony. Having made the Hijra more than a year and a half ago, when we arrived, 1€ was worth 17 Egyptian pounds. And even then, I already noticed immense poverty among the Egyptian people, who sometimes live in unsanitary slums, on the streets, eating from garbage cans... Subhanallah, today everything has worsened. Today, 1€ is worth up to 40 pounds on the streets. Prices have tripled, but salaries have not at all. Misery is increasingly present, especially for widowed women, divorced women, those without work, the elderly, students...

I wanted to tell you about a couple on Hijra in Egypt who collect donations to distribute water, ready meals, sometimes Qurans, and fund water fountains. They are trustworthy people who post evidence of their efforts in their stories.

If you wish to make a sadaqa, I leave you their Instagram here.
